Job Summary:

In accordance with established standards, policies and procedures, the Clinical Nurse Coordinator provides overall operational direction for the Program. Manages care/service within the Program’s philosophy, goals and available resources.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1.Supervises nursing and clerical staff through monitoring clinical performance and defining areas for improvement. Collaborates with the Program Manager, nursing leadership team, and interdisciplinary team members regarding unit and performance issues. Provides input into staff educational needs and develops plans for continuing education programs in conjunction with the clinical instructor. Completes performance reviews and plans for assigned staff members.
2.Manages the operation of the Unit/Program and supports the delivery of direct/indirect patient care within budgeted resources. Coordinates or delegates patient assignments, develops rotations, approves vacation, short term leaves and overtime, and monitors unit activities.
3.Acts as a clinical resource to nursing staff, students, and other members of the interdisciplinary team, by demonstrating procedures, answering questions related to clinical practice issues, problem solving, and anticipating potential concerns. Advises Program Manager of issues/concerns.
4.Monitors the patient acuity and flow of patients on the nursing unit, to ensure that staffing levels match patient and unit needs. Makes adjustments to the assignments to reflect changes in acuity.
5.In conjunction with the Program Manager, and clinical instructor, participates in the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of applicants for positions. Makes recommendations to Program Manager regarding staffing plans.
6.Provides input into the development, delivery and evaluation of orientation, in conjunction with other members of the health care team. Facilitates transition to unit by ensuring orientation meets individual needs.
7.Collaborates with the nursing leadership team and interdisciplinary team members in identifying learning needs of nurses and implementing educational strategies and programs. Presents in–service educational sessions for staff as required.
8.Assists the nursing leadership team and other resource nurses in promoting further education, by mentoring staff regarding educational opportunities, and models/mentors strategies for interpersonal conflict resolution with members of interdisciplinary health care team.
9.Assists in the handling of employee relations issues including responsibility for up to step two of the grievance procedure. Works with Program Manager toward resolution of issues.
10.Provides input towards the formulation, implementation and evaluation of the Program patient care standards and polices and procedures based on identified changes in patient populations and treatment approaches. Collaborates with interdisciplinary care team members regarding quality improvement initiatives by making recommendations for projects. Follows up on incidents concerning staff and patients and ensures critical incident stress debriefing sessions are held as required.
11.Manages change by meeting with staff to discuss issues affecting the Unit/Program. Meets with the management team to review and discuss management and co-ordination of the units within the Program.
12.Participates and facilitates rounds, clinics, and case conferences with health care personnel and families and collaborates with nursing staff by assisting in the assessment of patient problems and needs, planning and prioritizing of nursing interventions, and implementing and evaluating interventions.
13.Provides information/recommendations to the Program Manager or designate regarding equipment and supply needs for budget planning purposes. Ensures that equipment for the program is maintained and available as required. Develops/follows processes for equipment purchase, maintenance and Quality Assurance monitoring.
14.Assists the nursing leadership team and other members of the interdisciplinary team in the identification of researchable clinical patient care management problems. Participates in research initiatives and projects related to patient care and/or nursing practices as requested, disseminates findings, and assists in applying and implementing research findings into practice.
15.Represents the Program on external and internal committees as assigned and reports information back to the Unit/Program staff.
16.Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
•Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing. Three (3) year’s recent, tertiary experience in the clinical speciality of the Program, including one year’s recent experience in a supervisory/leadership capacity; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
•Current practising registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
•Current CPR certification.
