Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The Coordinator, Porter Services supervises the work of designated staff, provides work direction, monitors and adjusts transport job requests, responds to client queries, trains and orients staff on proper work procedures, and makes recommendations on departmental policy and procedure changes. This role is a working supervisor who also performs porter duties such as transporting patients, specimens, equipment, cleaning equipment and within the hospitals in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures on an as needed basis.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Provides work direction to designated staff by performing duties such as scheduling and coordinating work assignments and breaks. Provides training and orientation to staff members. Observes porters completing tasks, provide feedback and support to ensure standard processes followed. Provides input into performance evaluations.
2. Ensures the quality and quantity of work output by reviewing, prioritizing, and monitoring porters’ tasks via electronic system to ensure timely satisfactory responses to work requests.
3. Review porter and porter coordinator communication binders each shift to stay up to date on standard operating procedures. Communicate updates and reminders on standard procedures/department operations to porter through daily huddles, direct communication and reviewing written materials.
4. Receives and responds to queries from clients related to porter services. Investigates concerns by following up on the complaints, taking notes on the particulars of the incident or occurrence and notifying appropriate staff as necessary to make corrections to work procedures. Follows up with clients regarding the resolution of the issue. Notifies Manager as deemed applicable regarding the resolution of larger and/or more complex issues.
5. Observes workflow variations and provides recommendations to the manager on adjusting departmental policies and procedures.
6. Monitors calls from staff regarding illnesses and absences from work and records information on sign in sheet. Liaises with Staffing Office regarding the requirement to call in relief staff.
7. Transport patients to and from required areas as requested by hospital staff in accordance with standard procedures and policies.
8. Moves patients from various locations by walking, wheeling or utilizing mechanical aides such as specialty beds, mobilizers, wheelchairs and stretchers to ensure prompt arrival at specified location. Provides support to clients by methods such as supplying blankets when requested and notifying nursing and/or technical staff of any problems and/or client concerns.
9. Assists the patient care team with mobilization of clients by lifting and transferring clients on and off stretchers and wheelchairs, following prescribed safe techniques and lifting practices such as utilizing mechanical lifts and/or slide boards as directed.
10. Transports deceased by obtaining morgue stretcher, proceeding to the ward/area as notified, assisting nursing staff with transferring deceased on to the stretcher as directed, moving deceased to the morgue, transferring deceased onto empty rack in cooler utilizing versa lifts, and logging information such as time of arrival, client's name, ward, and body tag number for records.
11. Transports items such as equipment, blood products, specimens and charts as per established policies and procedures. Organizes and groups tasks to ensure delivery times are met.
12. Retrieves, delivers and cleans equipment designated for storage in the Medical Equipment Depot in accordance with established policies and procedures. Checks condition of equipment when performing cleaning duties and reports any maintenance or repair requirements to appropriate maintenance personnel.
13. Monitors equipment stored in the Medical Equipment Depot and arranges to clean items every 30 days, ensure equipment is plugged in and ready for use by patient.
14. Attaches equipment locating devices to equipment and records asset and tag numbers on tracking sheet.
15. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Grade 12 plus four (4) years’ recent, related experience including one (1) year in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
