PEDIATRIC GASTROENTEROLOGIST LOCUM

 

Temporary Full Time - 1 year term (July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026) (start date is flexible)

Hours per week: 32.31 (1680 hours/year)

BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) seeking a Locum Pediatric Gastroenterologist. BCCH is the only dedicated pediatric tertiary care centre for the province of British Columbia in Canada serving a population of approximately 4 million people.

 

Applications are invited from clinicians, clinician-scientists and clinician-investigators with potential to thrive in a busy clinical and academic environment. As the successful candidate, you will have demonstrated a commitment to pediatric gastroenterology with excellence in providing a high level of quality clinical care and potential for academic research and teaching. You will be eligible to obtain a specialists license to practice medicine in British Columbia as well as sub-specialty training in pediatric gastroenterology and be a Fellow or be eligible for Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

 

Primary Job Duties of a Pediatric Gastroenterologist

 

1. Patient Assessment & Diagnosis

  • Evaluate patients with symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and poor growth.
  • Review medical histories and conduct physical examinations.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as blood work, stool analysis, imaging (e.g., ultrasound, MRI), and endoscopic procedures.

2. Treatment & Disease Management

  • Develop treatment plans for conditions like GERD, IBD, celiac disease, food allergies, and liver disorders.
  • Prescribe medications such as acid reducers, antibiotics, or immunosuppressants.
  • Provide nutritional guidance for conditions like failure to thrive, malabsorption, or obesity.
  • Monitor and adjust treatment plans as needed. 

3. Performing Procedures

  • Conduct endoscopies, colonoscopies, and biopsies to diagnose and treat conditions.
  • Place and manage feeding tubes (e.g., NG tubes, G-tubes) and parenteral nutrition.
  • Perform esophageal pH monitoring to assess acid reflux.

4. Collaboration & Coordination

  • Work with pediatricians, dietitians, surgeons, and other specialists.
  • Coordinate care for children with complex medical needs.
  • Educate patients and families on managing digestive disorders.

5. Research & Continuing Education

  • Stay updated on advancements in pediatric gastroenterology.
  • Conduct clinical research on digestive diseases in children.
  • Train and mentor medical students or residents in pediatric GI care.

6. Administrative Duties

  • Document patient visits, diagnoses, and treatment plans in medical records.
  • Communicate with insurance providers for approvals of tests or treatments.
  • Participate in hospital or clinic meetings and quality improvement initiatives.
