Where are you on your career journey? Unemployed? Underemployed? Employed but looking for a new job? Is there need for a drastic change, a minor correction or a pat on your back because you are moving along well toward your short- and long-term goals? Whatever your situation, you may be facing a change. Transition is the process people go through coming to terms with the new situation. With a change in your career, you may be experiencing transition in several different areas – new job, new boss, new co-workers, new location, new daily routine. Job loss is a major life crisis. It ranks fourth on the stress scale after personal injury, death of a family member, and divorce. If there is no opportunity for immediate re-employment, the person may go through a grieving process similar to that associated with death of a loved one, divorce, serious illness, etc. Each person's situation and reaction is unique. However, a majority of people go through a common series of reactions to job loss:
Each person experiences the grief process differently - the time spent in each stage will vary as will the sequence of the stages. No matter how the process may play itself out in your life, it is the right process for you! Allow yourself the time to deal with each stage. Support from family and friends, knowledge of resources, stress management techniques, willingness to re-evaluate goals, hobbies and interests will also be important coping tools for helping a person through the job-search phase and avoiding job search "burnout".
