BC Mental Health and Addiction Services (BCMHAS) provides a diverse range of specialized, “one-of-a kind” mental health and addiction services for children, adolescents and adults across the province.  These include Adult/Geriatric and Neuropsychiatry Services located at Riverview Hospital, Adult Forensic Psychiatric Services located at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital and six regional clinics, and Child and Youth Mental Health and Addiction Services located at BC Children’s Hospital.  Recognizing that people with mental health challenges may also have co-occurring issues with substance misuse, the assessment and treatment of addictions forms an integral part of these programs.

 

In addition to providing specialized mental health and addiction services, BCMHAS also provides provincial leadership in mental health and addiction research, education and knowledge exchange, and health promotion and illness prevention in support of system-wide improvements.

Nurse Practitioner, Provincial Mental Health Metabolic Clinic

BC Mental Health & Addiction Services - Regular Part Time .8 FTE

Child & Adolescent Mental Health & Addiction Program at BC Children’s Hospital

Vancouver, British Columbia

 

Reporting to the Program Manager, Child & Adolescent Mental Health & Addiction Program at BC Children’s Hospital, you will play a key role within a small team of professionals establishing a Provincial Metabolic Clinic to provide specialized management of the endocrinologic/metabolic, psychiatric and health information/education needs of children and youth with mental disorders and their parents/families.  The Provincial Metabolic Clinic will provide assessment, screening, education and leadership through regularly scheduled clinics and the development of a provincial database to track anthropomorphic and laboratory data and medication records provided by health care providers on all children and youth prescribed and/or taking psychiatric medications which affect metabolism (with a particular focus on second generation antipsychotic medications).

 

The team will also include a 0.8 fte Healthy Living Coach, 0.8 fte Dietitian, and physicians supporting psychiatrist / endocrinologist clinic sessions. Working in a collaborative and multidisciplinary team environment, you will be responsible for providing integrated screening, education, comprehensive treatment recommendations, and follow-up, both in the clinic environment and through provincial outreach using the provincial database to monitor and support clients and to assist service providers to deliver best practice care utilizing new technologies such as telehealth.

 

The activities and research initiatives you will be involved in with the Provincial Mental Health Metabolic Clinic will be utilized to improve service delivery both at the Children’s Hospital site and in communities across British Columbia through the development and dissemination of a comprehensive toolkit of healthy living resources, including the screening tools, information/resources and an interactive website where parents, families, children, youth and service providers will have access to a range of evidence-based resources.  The Provincial Mental Health Metabolic Clinic is part of the Provincial Child and Youth Healthy Living initiative; you will work in partnership with the project team supporting this initiative when developing these tools and resources. 

 

You have a level of level of education, training, and experience equivalent to current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC), and 5 years of experience in a health, social services, government, or community setting. Through your education and experience, you have developed an understanding and awareness of the needs of children, youth and their families/caregivers dealing with mental health and substance use issues, particularly when managing the use of psychiatric medications and the associated effects these can have on metabolism. You are effective in addressing health-related behaviours and understand the need for, and challenges associated with; building resiliency; understanding individual motivations; and the development of self management skills, to achieve a healthy lifestyle. You have a wide range of skills including; establishing strong working relationships within a small multidisciplinary setting, and with wider regional and provincial networks; developing resource materials, ensuring best practice and current literature informs this work; providing staff training and support; and, community development activities and partnerships. You possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and exercise critical thinking, creativity, and innovation when solving problems and making decisions. You have integrity and initiative, and are competent, efficient, and organized, leading you to skillfully deal with multiple tasks and to work equally well independently as with others. You have highly developed interpersonal skills and you are capable of developing meaningful, respectful, and productive collaborative relationships with others.
