The BC Cancer Agency (BCCA) is committed to reducing the incidence of cancer, reducing the mortality from cancer, and improving the quality of life of those living with cancer. It provides a comprehensive cancer control program for the people of British Columbia by working with community partners to deliver a range of cancer services, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, research, education, supportive care, rehabilitation and palliative care. It operates four regional cancer centres in the Fraser Valley, Kelowna, Vancouver and Vancouver Island, with a fifth centre that opened in Abbotsford in summer 2008 and a sixth centre scheduled to open in Prince George in 2012.
The BCCA is an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) which plans, manages and evaluates specialty and province-wide health care services across BC. PHSA embodies values that reflect a commitment to excellence. These include: Patients first • Best value • Results matter • Improvements through knowledge • Open to possibilities.
The BCCA and PHSA are committed to the continuing leadership of world class research in the full spectrum of cancer control activities. These include basic and translational research to understand the causes of cancer, to eliminate the impact of cancer in patients diagnosed with the disease and to improve the lives of those living with or cured of cancer. The BCCA has entered a new era of integrated research activity that will build on the foundation of the past to reach new heights of progress through extended collaborations and partnerships both within and external to the organization.
The Genome Sciences Centre has a primary mandate to deploy resources and technology of a high-throughput genome mapping and DNA sequencing lab to decrypt the genetic code, specifically to advance cancer research, diagnosis and treatment.
Combining the experience of world-renowned scientists, the GSC plays a major role in the fields of genomics and bioinformatics as well as various genome projects around the world. The priority of the centre is to find innovative means to automate the sequencing and fingerprinting process, develop cost-effective measures that will make such research financially viable and utilize state-of-the-art computing facilities to collect, mine, analyze and disperse data collected at this and other genome facilities.
Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre is under the auspices of the BC Cancer Agency.
