What you’ll do

 

  • Collect and receive a variety of specimens by methods such as reviewing requirements on requisitions, collecting specimens from patient according to established procedures, receiving, labeling and documenting specimens from various areas within the facility and/or patients and following established safety measures to maintain the integrity of the specimen during the collection, preparation, transport, processing and storage stages.
  • Perform routine and/or complex tests as well as additional procedures and techniques in designated laboratory areas by performing functions such as following established guidelines and methods, utilizing automated instruments or manual techniques, validating tests performed by checking results for probable outcomes, entering patient results into a computerized system and referring questionable results to supervisor for direction in accordance with departmental standards and industry guidelines for additional procedures.
  • Prepare a variety of solutions, reagents, standards and controls by methods such as identifying requirements, gathering appropriate solutions, chemicals and/or ingredients and measuring ingredients according to prescribed instructions for use in testing procedures.
  • Set up, calibrate and maintain a variety of laboratory instruments by performing duties such as following established cleaning procedures at prescribed intervals and running calibrators, standards and controls to ensure all test results are precise and accurate.
  • Perform quality control within assigned area by methods such as identifying instrument malfunction and/or out of control test results, taking and documenting all corrective action and notifying supervisor or designated personnel of unresolved problems following established protocols.
  • Prepare specimens for transport to other facilities by methods such as packaging items, completing related transport forms in accordance with the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and Transportation of Dangerous Goods guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area by wiping down items such as laboratory equipment, work surfaces and benches according to established procedures and storing items in appropriate areas.
  • Respond to enquiries on items such as collection procedures and test results by methods such as retrieving information from manuals as well as computerized patient files and relaying information as appropriate.
  • Prepare reports for distribution by methods such as printing patient lab results from the computer system, sorting reports according to established procedures and forwarding reports to designated areas.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies by methods such as identifying depleting stock, notifying applicable personnel and/or completing requisitions and forwarding to Supervisor for approval and ordering.
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately report unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.

 

What you bring

 

Qualifications

 

  • Current registration with the Canadian Society of Laboratory Technologists.
  • Current registration as a Registered Technologist (General) with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Sciences, plus two (2) years of recent, related laboratory experience including one year of experience related to the area of the Additional Procedure and/or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
