The Surgical Recovery Specialist functions as an integral part of the ODHD Team, and as a provincial resource for the surgical recovery of organs, from deceased and living donors. This includes facilitating the recovery procedures, and perfusing and packaging organs for transplantation. This position is also responsible for the compilation and analysis of data for Quality Assurance, and for the formal development and delivery of educational programs on solid organ surgical recovery for health care professionals throughout the province of British Columbia.

 

The Surgical Recovery Specialist performs a variety of functions related to organ retrieval such as participation in recovery surgeries, on-site liaison with the donor hospital, review of donor documentation to ensure compliance to regulatory requirements, and communication with transplant centers and surgeons, transportation suppliers, Coroner, and donor families as needed. This key role also provides consultation, guidance and advice on surgical practices to hospital staff including the development and provision of educational initiatives. The Surgical Recovery Specialist is also responsible for maintaining surgical supplies and equipment, and inventory control and tracking in accordance with the BCT Quality Plan and Health Canada requirements. This position also contributes to continuous quality improvement by collecting and reporting data, and providing on-going education to hospital staff and donation and transplant stakeholders. Participation in an on-call rotation is required.

 

You have a level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree in a Health Sciences Program, plus three to five years of operating room experience. Familiarity with the operating room environment and surgical equipment and procedures is required. Certification or experience in the education of public and health-care personnel is desirable. Additionally, you bring strong verbal interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to interpret and clearly communicate complex clinical information in an often emotionally-charged environment. The role also requires the ability to negotiate and facilitate consensus within the donation and transplantation stakeholder community, as well as knowledge in the area of quality improvement. You have demonstrated problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and establish effective working relationships within the multi-disciplinary hospital environment.
