Our Critical Care Program

British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital

Our Critical Care Program treats more than 1,200 children annually. It is the only Intensive Care Unit in British Columbia that specializes in pediatric medicine. Care is given to infants, children and youths from newborn to 17 years old who have urgent needs due to life-threatening disease, injury, or following surgery, such as cardiac or brain surgery. All of our Nursing staff embody a system of values that includes a commitment to: Caring • Connection • Dedication • Learning • Teaching

A FAMILY CENTRED UNIT: Parents are encouraged to be with their child as often as possible. If families are new to the Unit, staff help them become familiar with the surroundings, and we offer a handbook and pictures for small children. Overall, our Nurses work to create an environment where the best possible care is combined with compassion and dedication for children and families who are experiencing crisis.

AN INTERPROFESSIONAL APPROACH: In order to maximize positive outcomes for our young patients, we provide interprofessional assessment, diagnosis, consultation, referral, and care for children with complex and challenging illnesses. This takes a commitment to building and fostering a collaborative environment where individual contributions and teamwork are expected. In the Unit, our Nurses are partnered with experienced and dynamic professionals who are at the top of their field in many varied medical, paramedical and allied healthcare disciplines. Together, this exceptional team is focused on just one thing— healing children.

AN EXCEPTIONAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT: It is our responsibility to create and maintain an environment where learning is as natural and familiar as the laughter and tears we often share. We do this by ensuring that our Nursing staff have access to intensive training and orientation programs that prepare them to positively impact the lives of children and families. We also know that we must prepare and educate the next generation of caregivers.
