Provincial Radiation Specialist

Environmental Health Services Division

A skilled scientific leader, you will provide professional guidance to an interdisciplinary team assessing and mitigating health risks arising from ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. You will provide expertise to the Office of the Provincial Health Officer on provincial radiation issues and to regional health authorities on local concerns related to naturally occurring and anthropogenic radiation exposures to the public. This role will see you develop and implement the radiation service’s strategic and operational goals in conjunction with the divisional director. You will be called upon to provide advice on prevention and response to emergency incidents involving radiation, research complex issues such as environmental science and health issues, and respond to requests for a wide variety of information pertaining to radiation sources and exposure.

 

You hold a Ph.D. in Health Physics or have an equivalent level of education and training enhanced by at least five years of related experience, including two years working in public health dealing with radiation exposure issues. Committed to continuous learning, you have maintained an advanced knowledge of radiation protection practices, policies and legislation through on-going self-study. As you will actively teach and research in areas directly relevant to policy and practices, you should be eligible for an academic appointment at a BC university. Formal training in risk assessment is required and you must demonstrate knowledge of chemical hazards. Experience working with Medical Health Officers, Environmental Health Officers and other public health professionals would be beneficial.
