WORKSEARCH ASSISTANCE - Résumé Writing and Cover Letters

The average amount of time an employer takes to initially scan a résumé is 30 seconds. It is important that the résumé be brief yet provide enough information for the employer to evaluate your qualifications and interest the employer enough to invite you for an interview. A résumé is like an advertisement and needs to be:

  • written with the employer's interests in mind
  • professional in appearance
  • targeted for a particular job or organization
  • "letter-perfect"?spelling and grammar mistakes can mean an automatic trip to the reject pile
  • an honest and clear demonstration of your skills, abilities and achievements
  • a clear indication of what you offer to the employer

In today's job market, a generic, "one-size-fits-all" resume will not be effective. Employers look for people who have researched the job and can explain clearly how their skill, knowledge and abilities are a perfect match. For help in identifying your skills, visit the Skills Assessment section.
