LEARNING AND TRAINING - Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

What is it?

The PLAR process allows workers to demonstrate their relevant skills and knowledge to receive college credits for training courses recognized jointly by MITAC and participating community colleges. The PLAR system:

  • provides portability of training and skills
  • improves cost-efficiency in training course development
  • enhances working relationships between the mining industry and educational institutions
  • provides access to high quality generic training courses
  • promotes life-long learning

How does it work?

Mining industry workers are assessed by PLAR evaluators, who have been accredited by community colleges, to determine how many credits he/she should be awarded for prior knowledge and life experience. These credits are awarded in the form of accreditation towards post-secondary certification.
